Isola Bella is one of Taormina’s most distinctive seaside places, well suited to a half-day or full day of swimming, snorkelling, scenery and a little history. The tiny island is a protected nature reserve, linked to the shore by a narrow strip of beach that can appear or disappear with the tide.
The water around Isola Bella is particularly beautiful, with rocky seabeds and small coves to explore. The beach is mainly pebbly, so water shoes are useful, especially when entering the sea or moving along the shore.
When the tide permits, walking across the natural strip to the island is one of the most memorable experiences here. Once there, paths lead through Mediterranean and exotic vegetation to panoramic areas and remnants associated with the historic residence of Florence Trevelyan, who owned the island in the late 19th century.
Isola Bella has been a nature reserve since 1998. Its combination of clear water, shoreline scenery and protected landscape makes it a rewarding place to linger, whether the day is centred on swimming or on exploring the island itself.
