Beyond the Basilica of San Giovanni, the Catacomba di San Giovanni opens into a main gallery lined with thousands of burials. Its scale is immediately striking, while the close succession of tombs gives the passage a solemn, contemplative character.
Among the burials are richly decorated tombs and vivid frescoes, including one depicting the Syracusan Virgin crowned by Christ. These surviving details offer a glimpse of the visual language of early Christian expression in Sicily.
Particularly evocative are the monumental cisterns transformed into chapels. The Rotunda of Marina, the Rotunda of Adelfia and the Cubiculum of Pope Eusebius each lend the complex a distinctive architectural presence.
Situated in Largo San Marciano, the catacomb forms part of the historic landscape around San Giovanni: a place where the extent of the burials and the intimacy of the decorated spaces can be appreciated together.
