Directly opposite Palermo Cathedral in the old city centre, Palazzo Asmundo is a historic palace and house museum occupying an unusually evocative position on Via Pietro Novelli. Built between 1615 and 1767, it reflects the long evolution of an aristocratic residence from its early foundations to its late-Baroque completion.
Originally owned by the Joppolo family, the palace was later acquired by Giuseppe Asmundo, President of Justice and Marquis of Sessa. Its interiors retain a cultivated decorative richness, with stuccoes by followers of Giacomo Serpotta and frescoes by Gioacchino Martorana.
The museum’s eclectic collections bring together Sicilian ceramics, nineteenth-century porcelain, maps, postcards and coins. Rather than presenting a single, narrowly defined collection, Palazzo Asmundo offers a glimpse into the tastes and visual culture associated with the palace and with Sicily more broadly.
From the halls, the Cathedral of Palermo is seen in striking proximity, providing a distinctive architectural perspective on one of the city’s defining monuments. The palace also houses the Asmundo Bistrò, adding a contemporary setting for Sicilian dining to its combination of art, history and urban atmosphere.
