On Piazza Verdi, at the meeting point of Palermo’s old city and its northern expansion, the Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele is the city’s principal theatre and opera house. Dedicated to King Victor Emanuel II, it is the largest opera house in Italy and the third largest in Europe, with a floor space of 7,730 square metres.
Designed by Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile, the theatre is a neoclassical masterpiece of grand proportions. Its façade is defined by a high staircase and Corinthian colonnade, while state rooms, halls, galleries and monumental staircases extend around the auditorium to form an imposing architectural complex.
Inside, richly frescoed interiors lead to an auditorium arranged over five tiers of boxes and galleries, with seating for up to 3,200 spectators. The theatre is also renowned for its acoustics.
The Teatro Massimo is open to the public during performances and for guided tours.
