Built over earlier Greek structures on the slopes of Montevergine hill, Catania’s Teatro Antico greco-romano comprises the remains of two open-air semicircular theatres in the city centre.
Constructed in lava stone, the Roman Theatre once accommodated around 7,000 spectators. Its surviving tiers and curved forms offer a vivid sense of the scale and organisation of ancient theatrical life.
Set within the fabric of modern Catania, the site provides a striking glimpse into the city’s ancient heritage and the layers of construction that preceded it.
Admission is free, and advance booking is not recommended. The theatre is at Via Vittorio Emanuele II, 266.
