At the tip of Ortygia’s promontory, Castello Maniace commands the meeting point of Syracuse and the sea. This striking citadel was built between 1232 and 1240 by the Emperor Frederick II, and remains one of Sicily’s most important Swabian-era monuments.
The castle is also among the best-known fortifications associated with Frederick II’s reign. Its position gives the monument a distinctly maritime character, with the surrounding water shaping both its setting and its sense of purpose.
Castello Maniace stands in Piazza Federico di Svevia, at the southern end of Ortygia in Siracusa. It is a natural point at which to appreciate the island’s historic importance and its enduring relationship with the sea.
