Palazzo Riso is a late-eighteenth-century noble residence in the heart of Palermo’s historic centre, built by the Ventimiglia Princes of Belmonte. Its architecture brings together the magnificence of the late Baroque and the measured clarity of Neoclassicism, making it an interesting example of an aristocratic private residence from the period.
After years of abandonment and decay, the palace was acquired by the Sicilian Region in 1986 and restored during the 1990s. The work returned an important monument to the city while creating a new space for exhibitions.
Since 2005, Palazzo Riso has been home to Riso, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Sicily. Its setting lends a historical dimension to the museum’s contemporary programme, placing recent art within one of Palermo’s most characterful urban contexts.
Palazzo Riso is at Via Vittorio Emanuele, 365, in Palermo’s historic centre. Admission is free, and booking is not required. Further information is available at museoartecontemporanea.it.
